STANLEY BAY PARK.

COMPLETION OF THE WORK. ASSISTING THE UNEMPLOYED. CONTRIBUTIONS TO FUNDS. A successful plea for a contribution to assist in the completion of a recreation area at Stanley Bay Park was made by Mr. E. Aldridge, Mayor of Devonport, at yesterday's meeting of the Citizens' Unemployment Committee. The Devonport borough had only one playing area for its population of over 10,0G0, said Mr. Aldridge, in urging the claims of the Stanley Bay proposal. About £I2OO or £I3OO had been expended on the work, and there was available a further sum of about £2OOO to complete the scheme. This, however, was not sufficient, and the Devonport Borough Council would be grateful for any allocation the committee might make. An allocation of £3OO, with a Government pound for pound subsidy, should enable the work to be completed. The committee decided to grant £3OO, conditional on a Government subsidy for a similar amount being obtained. The area concerned, which is eight acres in extent, is situated near the Stan ley Bay wharf and is vested in the Devon port Borough Council as a recreation re serve. Several years ago £SOO was expended in erecting a retaining wall, which the Borough Council stone-faced at a cost of £450. The sum of £4OO was then sub scribed for equipping a children's play ground on the area. Stanley Bay was constituted a special rating area for the purpose of raising a loan of £2OOO to fill in the area behind the stone wall. Unfortunately, said Mr. Aldridge last evening, too much soft mud was dredged into the area and ihe material shrank, with the result that more spoil, was still required. in order to complete the work at the reserve the Stanley Bay Improvement Society recently raised £9OO and handed the money to the Devonport Borough Council, which has applied for a pound for pound subsidy from the Government This application went forward this week, but no advice has yet beeu received from Wellington. In addition, the Borough Council has contributed £2OO and the Returned Soldiers' Association £IOO. It is also anticipated that the local tennis club will contribute. Twelve returned soldiers are at present engaged m forming four tennis courts on the area. If the Government subsidy is forthcoming, it is anticipated by Mr. Aldridge that work could be found for between 30 or 40 men in levelling, spread ing and top-dressing the area. At the relief rate of wages the money, it is hoped, will be available to provide work for that number of men for about ten weeks. THE MAYOR'S FUND. OYER £3OOO SUBSCRIBED.
