POSTAL SHIPPING SERVICE.
PLEA FOR CONTINUANCE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL REPORTER.] WELLINGTON. Friday. Complaints regarding the discontinuance of the Postal Department's shipping news' service were made by several members when the vote for the Marine Department was under consideration in the House to-day. Mr. H. L. Tapley (Dunedin North) said the posting of the arrivals and departures of ships at the post offices was of very great value to the community. Mr. M. J. Savage (Auckland West) said i thousands of persons were vitally interested m the movements of ships. In - comparison with the valuable service ren- . dered the cost was small. ; The Minister of Marine, Hon. G. J. Anderson, said the Marine Department \ had nothing whatever to do with the shipping news service, which was provided • by the Post and Telegraph Department. i That department had offered to continue 3 the service if the harbour boards would - pay for it, but he understood the boards , had declined to do so. It was not a 3 matter for the Marine Department, > which certainly would not pay the cost of the service.
