HOTEL AS GAMING HOUSE.

CONVICTION OF LICENSEE. PENALTY OF £2O IMPOSED. [BY telegraph.— press association.] WELLINGTON. Thursday A fine of £2O was imposed in the Police Court to-day on Michael Burke, aged 28, licensee of the City Hotel, for Using his premises as a common gaming house. It was stated for defendant that he received only £8 a week as manager of the hotel, and he foolishly tried to supplement this by taking bets. He only acted as agent. The amounts were small. Ho was losing his licence, and had agreed to transfer. Tho magistrate said defendant must have known the risk ha was running.
