STORMONT SHIELD MATCH.

NEWTON DEFEATS RICHMOND. LARGE NUMBER OF INJURIES. The Stormont Memorial Shield match drew an attendance of 7000 to Carlaw Park on Saturday, when Newton, winners of the senior grade championship, defeated Richmond, winners of the Roope Rooster competition, by 25 points to 14. The weather was perfect, and the ground was unusually hard in places. Newton proved too speedy for the Roope Rooster winners, but the scores did not nearly represent the difference between the two teams. Richmond lost numerous chances through its backs failing at the critical moment. Several of Newton's tries were lucky ones, and the try scored by Dufty seemed very doubtful. There was an unusual number of injuries, and the time off for stoppages was extraordinary. Altogether, Newton lost four players and Richmond one. In the second spell Newton played with 11 men. The game opened with a brilliant passing bout by Newton. From its twenty-five Dufty passed to Clarke, and the ball was handled by each back until Little was stopped just as the movement looked dangerous. Newton's forwards swept over the opposition, and Rhodes scored between the posts. Dufty converted. The Richmond backs set up a determined offensive, but Turley was thrown into touch. Clarke made a good run past several Richmond backs, but ; he hung on too long. From a scrum in Newton's territory Davis passed to Turley, who made a clever opening and ran to half-way, where he passed to Bass. The last-named raced for the lino with an open field, but Herewini caught him inches from Newton's line. Dufty kicked hard and Clarke followed on fast to score. Dufty missed at goal. Dufty was again brilliant in a passing bout. He drew the defence cleverly and passed to Little, who beat three saen, to score a nice try. failed to convert. Swift obtained possession, and when pressed by Herewini he passed infield to Hanlon, who raced between the posts, for Carroll to convert. Turton beat the opposing backs, but his pass to laylor was too late, and Newton was lucky to save. Richmond continued to show to advantage. Newton was now playing with 11 men, Somers and Rhodes having had to retire with injuries. A heavy shower swept the ground and the ball became very greasy. Good play by Jenkinson paved the way for Richmond's nest try, and Turton followed up a long kick and scored near the corner. Taylor failed at goal. Richmond made strong efforts to wipe out defeat. Hanlon. who was now playing at jive-eighths, made two brilliant openings. At the right moment he passed to lurton, anrl Clarke's superior pace saved iNewton. GOOD GAME AT ROTORUA. [by telegraph. —OWN correspondent. ] ROTORUA. Saturday. A League football match was played here between the Richmond third grade team and the Rotorua B team The game was very well contested. Richmond won bv 8 points to 0. Richmond secured a try and that was the-only score on either side until within two minutes of the close of the game, when a good passing run by Richmond's backs resulted in another try. which was converted. Rotorua made great, efforts to even the score and made a very good fight, .having Richmond .pinned on uieir goal line for about 15 minutes.
