Sir Samuel Hoare, learned the result of the Schneider Cup race he sent the following message to Air Vice-Marshal F. R. Scarlett, who witnessed the event at Venice: — " I am delighted to learn the issue of today's contest with our Italian friends, whose skill and sportsmanship have been so abundantly shown in previous races. Please convey to Flight-Lieutenant Webster and all concerned my heartiest congratulations on the magnificent victory of the Supermarine-Napier S5 and the Napier-Lion engine.
