WOMAN BOOKMAKER.
[OPERATIONS AT ELLERSLIE. ••A VERY GOOD TURNOVER." FINE OF TWENTY-FiVE POUNDS. Detected carrying on the business of a bookmaker at Ellerslie on Monday, Gladys riorence Mackrell, aged 32, pleaded guilty jn the Police Court yesterday, and was fined £25 with costs. ' Tins woman has been carrying on the business of a bookmaker for 18 months," said Chief-Detective Cummings. " She has a 'double' round at Onehunga. She has been under observation for about 12 months." The chief detective added that accused had apparently been doing well at the business. She accepted bets of 10s, 5s and 2s 6d. When she started out on the course on Monday she had £5 ss, and when interviewed by the police on the grounds there was £33 12s 6d in her handbag. "She has been having a very good turnover " Mr. Cummings continued. "She has jnanv clients and a number of women working for her. She admitted she paid them well and said that yesterday was onlv a fair day. She alleges that one woman she hau working for her defrauded her of some hundreds of pounds. She has her own house and is married, with two children. She has a' good bank account also. Mr. Moody, for accused, said it was the first time he lad ever known a woman bookmakei to appear in Court. "For what it is worth," he said, " I will say that her husband lias been out of work for some time, but; that he is now working." Mr. F. K Hunt, S.M. (drily): I do not think he would need to work with a wife bringing in an' income like this. "A very fortunate husband, 1 should Bay," Mr. Moody agreed. The woman would not continue the practice and he asked that she be dealt with as leniently as possible. The Magistrate: 1 will deal with her as I have with other first offenders. She will be fined £26 with costs.
