NEWMARKET INTERESTS.
NEW TRAFFIC OUTLET. Newmarket Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor," Mr. S. Donaldson, presiding.' In connection with the proposed new traffic outlet, a communication was received from the secretary of the Education Board stating that the board would approve of the taking of the land required on condition that adequate compensation was paid. The matter was referred to the sub-committee appointed to deal with the acquisition of land for the outlet. The Public Works Department reported that on going into the the particulars of the desired loan for the relief of unemployment, it was found that the proposed work in Mortimer Pass is to be carried out by the City Council. It was decided to abandon the Mortimer Pass scheme and interview the local Public Works engineer as to the likelihood of a loan being granted for similar work on the Domain side of Carlton Gore Road. Messrs. H. Gregory and J. Hardley made strong references to the delay in putting through the loan, caused, they considered, by departmental methods. A letter was received from the DirectorGeneral of Health drawing attention to the non-payment of the council's share of the cost of the recent Water Commission, and asking that the amount due be paid as early as possible. A recommendation from the Legal and Finance Committee that payment be. deferred until further information was obtained on the action taken by other local bodies was adopted.
