DAMAGE BY FIRE.
OUTBREAK AT WELLINGTON. HEAVY LOSSES SUSTAINED. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A fire occurred in Tory Street last night in the two-storey building owned by Messrs. Thompson, Lewis and Co., and occupied by Messrs. Groves and Ryan, motor engineers, Digby E. Perret and Co., timber merchants and box manufacturers, and the Royal and Ancient Order of Buffaloes. All the lodge fittings, including a piano and some valuable carved oak, and also a quantity of regalia recently imported from England, were lost. Their value is estimated at £450. They were insured for £3OO in the Guardian office. All the stock and machinery in Perret's premises • were destroyed. The insurance is £3OO on stock and fittings in the Eagle, Star, and British Dominions office, and £IOO on the plant and machinery of the box factory. In the garage two motor-cars and two one-ton trucks were destroyed. Most of the machinery and fittings were ruined. There is a policy of £SOO in the British Traders' office on stock and fittings. Six cars were removed by the son of the licensee of" the Dominion Hotel, next door, and by another man. DWELLING AT MOTTNT ALBERT. BRIGADE'S HOPELESS FIGHT. Fire destroyed a five-roomed house in Domain Road, on the slopes of Mount Albert, shortly before two o'clock yesterday morning. Ths building was owned by Mr. H. C. Smith, and was unoccupied at the time of the outbreak. The Mount Albert Brigade was quickly on the scene, but efforts to save the house had to be abandoned owing to the lack of sufficient water pressure, the building being situated above the water level. The cause of the outbreak is not known. * The house, which was being renovated, was insured for £SOO in the State Fire office. The furniture was not insured. HOUSE NEAR MOSEINSVILLE. EFFORTS OF BUCKET BRIGADE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN" CORRESPONDENT j MOKRINSTILLK, Wednesday. A five-roomed house, owned and occupied by Mr. E. C. N. Robinson, at Mangateparn, was destroyed by fire yesterdav. The furniture of one room was saved. A bucket brigade had the the fire nearly extinguished when the water gave out. The owner is a heavy loser.
