HOCKEY CONTESTS.

THE DEVON PORT. SHIELD* SOMERVILLE DEFEATS ARETA. UNIVERSITY'S EASY VICTORY. The Devonport Shield competition played under the auspices of the Auckland Hockey Association was continued at tbe I?emuera grounds on Saturday afternoon under treacherous playing conditions. The matches were fast and of an interesting character. University gave a particularly bright display against Somerville Colts and won by a margin of 10 goals- Somerville accounted for Areta after a very close struggle. Wesley easily defeated Epiphany. Results are as follows: University, 11, beat Somerville Colts, 1. Somerville, 4, beat Areta, 3. Wesley, 5, beat Epiphany, 1. SOMERYILLE V. ARETA. Areta attacked from the initial bully-off and reached Somerville's circle, where an infringement gave the latter a chance to clear. Areta broke through again but sound defensive play by ilaggett stopper! progress. C. Watts, with a tricky run. invaded the Areta circle, but his shot was blocked by Smallwood. Sharp attacks by Somerville followed and from close circle play Rogers scbred. Somerville returned with another good concerted movement and JJinkie was lucky to clear his circle. H. Watts put in a spirited dash that was countered by Smallwood and then Savage hit back to midheid. A Bortie by the Somerville vanguard was frustrated by Ashley and Smallwood intercepting. Seccombe placed Somerville in a good position, and after a hot tusaie in the goal-mouth Rogers scored. Faced with a deficit of two goals the Areta forward line set up an attack on the Somerville goal. L. Carter made a good flanking run and passed infield to J. Carter, who transferred to Taylor. The latter scored with a hot shot. H. Watts was prominent in a fine dash for Somerville and E. \V atts sent a hard shot just outside. Areta launched a combined movement from miafield and L. Carter evaded the defence and goaled from close range, evening up the score. " , . Somerville counter-attacked down the centre and only good play by St mat saved the situation for Areta. Upon changing round Somerville was first to he dangerous, a fine central offensive reaching the opposing circle, where ,T Carter relieved by cleverly intercepting. L. Carter, on the Areta right wing, made a good breakaway, but when close to the circle he fell and Rogers got back and cleared. Somerville rallied and a hot assault on the Areta goal followed, but splendid defence by Ninkie prevented a score. From midfield Seccombe initiated a. concerted attack that terminated in C. \\ atts scoring. . , . . j L Carter broke through for Areta and cross-hit to J. A cross-hit from Taylor to J. Carter saw the latter race into the circle and send the ball over the net. Continuing aggressive tactics Areta dominated the play and Taylor gonled. Areta maintained a strong offensive and made repeated efforts to even the score, but although it was often in advantageous positions the defence held and Somerville emerged victors in a very closely-contested game. The final scores were:—Somerville, 4; Areta, 3. j UNIVERSITY'S GOOD WIN. The early play in the game between University and Somerville Colts was m the former's favour. Several spirited concerted attacks by the University forwards kept the Somerville Colts stricUy defending. A tine movement was crowded with success when Philpotts secured and easily beat Cohen. Peace was conspicuous for the Colts, t-ut Radcliffe' stopped cleverly and sent his forwards away and, after fine cross-passing, Seelen scored. Peace and Preston were instrumental in placing the Celts in a good position, but the last-named hit across the goal-line. Half-time arrived with the score:—University. 2; Somerville Colts, 0. University set up an immediate attack that ended in Seelen goaling. Excellent conceited play by University s forwards saw a further goal scored by beelen. A good individual effort by Hunter was checked a. midfield and Philpotts gamed ground on the left flank for University. From . his centring hit Hamilton took into the circle and netted. A further assault by University saw Millar score. After a brief attack by the Colts had been repulsed the University forwards raced through and Hamiito\ central attack by Somerville terminated in a corner which was intercepted. Unreersity broke through and Philpotts scored at the second attempt University wturwd with another spirited dash and Hamilton coaled University was dominating the play and from a hot attack Radcliffe scored. The University forwards again invaded the circle and Seelen scored nicely. In the closing stages University persisted and Knrtcliffe added a further goal ™ final score:—University. 11; Somerville Colts. 1. WESLEY BEATS EPIPHANY. Wesley was first to be dangerous in the match against Epiphany, a fine cMitral attack headed by Burton reaching the circle. Wesley obtained a corner hit that was intercepted by Mills, and hit into the Wesley circle. where Burton cleared. Epiphany returned and gained .a corner, but it was unable to drive home its advantage. Fitt put his side in the lead with a nice goal, and then Epiphany made spirited efforts to even the score Upon resuming Wesley attacked and Fitt made no mistake with a hot shot. Further attacks Ly Wesley saw the Epiphany goal besieged and goals were added by Oldham and A M.
