VALUE OF FARM LANDS.
• Sir,-—Under the above heading in the Hbeaud of September 7, Mr. J, B. Thompson, land purchase controller, in his annual report to Parliament, has practically solved the problem of many farmers and what they are up against, He States that the Crown revaluation of discharged soldiers' properties "has undoubtedly had a good effect, but a wider realisation is needed oii the part of many owners and mortgagees of the necessity for writing down land and niortgagft values iu conformity with the productive capacity of the land." Many farmers are ing from heavy mortgages through having bought land during the boom, period, and it is almost impossible for numbers of them t6 keep their heads above water owing to the heavy interests 'they havfe to meet, along with heavy rates, insurance, the problem of labour, and a multitude of other, minor expenses attached to larming. If land values are too high for the farmer to make a Success Of his land, then it is up to the owners and mortgagees to write off a proportion of the value. This course been done by a tow thoughtful and considerate owners and mortgagees already, but also it is by a very few indeed. Farmmk.
