NOTES ON THE FORM.

TEA TIME'S FIRST SUCCESS. MASK AND KIOSK RUN WELL. |nV TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WANGANUI, Thursday. Tho Te Aroha-trained eeldinu Tea Time hit tno iront quickly in the Maiden Race and led throughout to score easily. A win lor lea Tune was nui;. as he had .not scored previously, 'although ho had only been once unplaced in eleven starts. Lie is improved and should win more hack sprints lias season. Utairi was expected to make a good showing, but he turned right round as the barrier rose and took no part in the contest. He is, reputed to ha\e lost of speed and shaped fairly last season, although he is evidently wayward. .Nothing was going better at the end of the Maiden Kites than Wild Pigeon, who finished last and just [ailed to reach the third horse. Lie seems likely to win a minor event soon and might be more at home over seven furlongs or a mile. Vigilance, Catkin and Liaison shaped creditably. and with s ''sht improvement should win in minor company, Lovematch was making her first appearance and should be better for the experience. The hurdlers that contested the Okehu Hurdles were not a good lot. but there were several useful ones among them. The improving Troilun scored in fair style. although he seemed lucky to win. San Pedro looked to have his measure at the last fence but foil, and the way was then easy for Troilns Brigadier \Di 11 and Tvoauau wero always in the rear. Their form was probably incorrect. Just John was bandv five furlongs from home, but was well beaten, although ho finished fourth. Defeat of Polydecies. The favourite, Polydecies, attempted to win the Hack Handicap from end to end. The task proved too much and ho weakened to finish fifth after leading into the straight. L'olydectes should strip better the next time out, and may bo an early winner in hack company. In winning the L'utiki Hack Handicap Athenry scored his second successive victory. lie is right at the too of his form, and his condition will be a factor in his favour in his coming engagements. Athenry was ridden a perfect race by H. Wiggins, and he was just in behind the leaders all the way until he made his run in the straight. In spito of the fact that ho had no luck in /lie running David Garrick was right, up fourth, and should be one to keep in mind. It was his first appearance for some months and he should improve. A few furlongs from home in the Putiki Hack Handicap Romantic appeared to meet with a little trouble, but he came with a strong finishing run to notch a creditable third. Cerf, who beat him for second place, was always in the picture and may shortly do better. An outsider in Royal Land effected a surprise in the Seafield Handicap by lending from the barrier and winning narrowly. Last week he wai well beaten in a moderate field of five at Marton and it was r.ot «nrprising that he whs at- a long price. Le Choucas was a good second favourite but, raced below expectations and was well beaten. In the middle stages he was handy enough to have a chance but he could make, no impression at the finish. Le Choucas lookpd really well arid it may not be wise to discard him. The Australian importation, Lausanne, who is a full brother to the speedy Valicare, had his first run in the Dominion in the Seafield Handicap and attracted some attention by showing up boldly behind the lender to the turn. Some keen judges in Australia regarded him as unreliable, but there can be no doubt that he can gallop fast. The race will bring him on and something better can bo expected from ■ him. Nastori and Reckless. Notwithstanding that she had No. 18 position at the post, Vast Acre was quickly in fr.int in the Dune Hack Handicap, and whs only in the last stage that she went under to Nastori. Vast Acre goes fast and should prove a decent proposition among the hack sprinters. With, any luck in the early stages Reckless woulcl have gone very close to winning the race.' After being a long way back the put in a fine run in the last couple of furlongs and was a close fourth. She does not appear to bo very robust but if nhe saddles up well should run well on the second day. On the strength of good track work Mask was sent out favourite for the Marangai Handbip and he duly scored, although only narrowly, in a hot finish with Allowav. Unless present intentions are altered Mask will £o to Auckland to contest the Avondale Cup, and he will be among the early fancies tor that event The race he had. together with another couple of weeks' work, should bring him in capital condition.

An outside position and a slow beginning meant that Bennanee had to cover a 10. of ground round the first bend in the Marangai Handicap. This left him well back and as he was always outside two or three horses he made a very creditable showing to finish sixth. It should ?iot be long before he is in winning vein again. Every race is improving Te Monanui and he should soon be reaching his best. It is unlikely that he would have beaten either Mask or Alioway but he would have been closer to them only for meeting a litt.e trouble when Vivo stumbled and nearly came down at the turn. As a two-year-old Kiosk was good, but last season he developed respiratory troubles and was operated upon. The operation has proved a. success and Kiosk gave a taste of his quality by winning the Fly ing Handicap in good style. He waited on_ the leaders to the turn and then put in a' fine run that landed him a winner by half a length. Kiosk has developed into a fine horse and wijl win more honours as a sprinter.
