SURPRISE BY ROYAL LAND. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WANGANUI. Thursday. The "Wangaiini Jockey Club's Spring Meetins %vas opened to-day in beautiful weather and before a good attendance. The going was splendid, considering the recent wet weather, and some excellent racing was witnessed. t. Only two favourites. Mask and Damans, were successful, but most of the winners were well backed, although Royal Land returned a substantial dividend. The local owner, Mr. G. Currie, had a good day, winning the Mangangai Handicap, with Mask and the Waueanui Guineas with Damaris. Auckland horses. Tea Time end Athenry, iwere returned as winners, while the Auckland horseman, 11. Wiggins, was successful on Athenry and Royal Land. The Maiden Race was a good betting race, with most support for Catkin, Broad Acre, Otairi and Tea Time. At the start Otairi - shipped round and took no part in the race. Tea Time was quickest to begin, followed by Aropeta—who lost his position Quickly—Maui, Vigilance and Panther. Running into the straight Tea Time was just in front of Maui, who was several lengths clear of Vigilance, Panther, Liaison, Catkin and Aro de Val. Once they straightened up Tea Time.went on to win well by ft length and a-half from Maui, who defeated Vigilance by a neck. Wild Pigeon finished fast, was right up fourth, with Catkin, Liaison and Aro de Val next; Tea Time should win again soon. Wild Pigeon, Liaison ana Catkin should pooh do better. Tne Okehu Hurdles. For the Okehu Hurdles Brigadier Bill was a slightly better favourite than Troilus, with Koauau also solidly supported. Pesliwa, Arataura and Troilus were quickest to the first fence. Once over Arataura went out and passing the stand he was six lengths clear of Pesbwa. who was several lengths in front of Troilus, Just John, Brigadier Bill and.._ San Pedro. Running along the tack Triiilus and Tawhei moved up, while San Pedro was also improving his position. Troilus and San Pedro were in charge at the last fence, but San fell and interfered slightly with Arataura as he rolled. This left Troilus to win easily by about three lengths from Peshwa, who defeated Arataura by half a length. Just John was a. fair fourth, followed by Tawhei, Koauau and Brigadier Bill. San Pedro was going well when he fell

and might have won. Koauau and Brigadier Bill were never dangerous. Five furlongs from home Ju;st John looked to have & chance, but tired. The run should do

him good. < The topweight, Polydectes, was a good favourite for the Putiki Hack Handicap, with Tintoretto and Athenry also well backed. From a good start Polydectes was quickly in front from Cerf and when the field settled down they were the leaders from Athenry, Tintoretto, Grand Lupin, Elysianor and David Garriek. Polydectes and Cerf were first into the straight, just ahead of Athenry. Komak and David Garriek,. who were bunched. Once in line for the post Xthenry put in his claim and won hy half a lensrth from Cerf, who beat the fast-finishing Romantic by a head. David Garriek was close ur> fourth, followed by Polydectes, Komak, Mister Gainn and Elysianor. Polydectes and David Garriek will be improved with the race and may shortly be seen to more advantage. Cerf and Romantic are also likely to improve. Biggest Dividend of the Day.

All started in the Seafield Handicap and the popular fancies were Monaghan and Le Choucas, with the eventual winner. Royal Land, at a long price. Royal Land was quickest to begin, while Partaga was left. Koyal "Land and Beaumont led along the back with Hipo, Lausanne, Royal Game, Joy Bird, Le Choucas and Thaw following in close . order. Thaw moved up quickly crossing the top. where Royal Game was * tip in front with Royal Land. Beaumont had dropped back. Royal Land led into the straight closely attended by Royal : Game, Jpy Bird and Thaw. In a good ! finish Royal Land stayed on to win by a short neck from Thaw, with Joy Bird a head away third. Hipo was close up fourth, with Mountain Top, Cohesion, Le Choucas and Royal Game almost in line next. Cos-

zaetic lost her rider. Lausanne went well to the turn but Monaghan was never sightefi. The three runners in the Wanganui Guineas were fairly evenly backed, with Damaris favourite. Great Charter was quickest to becin and ied for a couple of iurlongs. Then he was joined by In the Shade, with Damaris just in behind them. This order was maintained to the straight, I>ut once they straightened up Damaris drew UP on thp outside. Fifty ■ yard? from the post thev 'were practically in line, and in k. splendid finish Damaris secured the verdict by half a' head from Great Charter, ■who defeated In the Shade bv a head. Damaris has furnished into a tiiie filly and deserved her victory, as she finished with plenty of determination Nastori Finishes Well.

The Durie Hack Handicap was a fine letting race, with Bank Note, Denier and Carrigallen the best backed. From a fair start Oratrix was first out from Nastori, while Sovena was a little slow to begin. Vast Aero was in charge At the end of a couple of furlongs, and nad Carrigallen. Denier. Nastori. Chips and Arch Arrow a3 her nearest attendants. So they raced to the straight. In the run home Nastori came through strongly and won by half a length from Vast .Acre, who defeated Carrigallen by a neck. Reckless finished well in fourth position, and was followed by Chips, Te Kawana, Bank Note. Bronstell and Oratrix. Vast_ Acre had an outside post position, otherwise; she mav have won. Denier went, fast early, but faded out at the turn. Chips and - Bronstell shaped fairly and may soon do better. "Reckless was unlucky in the early stages and came from a long way back. There was pood betting on the Marimsai Handicap, with Mask, Te Monanui and Degage most in demand. The start was very uneven and a counle to get an advantage were Allowav 'and Degage, who led nast the stand from Hangnwera and Mnsk. Running along the back Alio way and Hangawern were in front from Degage, Panta gruel. Mask, Te Monanui and' Shining Armour. Between the three and four-furlong posts Monaghan ran to the front and he Jed into the straight from Mask, .Alloway and Degage. As soon as they straightened im Mask took charge, to be immediately challenged by Alloway. Another Good Finish. A good finish saw Mask beat Alloway by a head, with Te Monanui running on three lengths away,, third. Degage was fourth, followed by Monaghan. Bennanee —who was on the outside all the way—Shining Arinour and Vivo. Mask was always in the picture and finished gamely. He promises to do well this season. Vivo would have been closer only for stumbling near the turn. Beacoii Light and Eden Hall were liever sighted. Degage and Te Monanui went good races. For the Flying Handicap LyEander was a £5 better favourite than Grand Knight, with Whenuanui also well supported. Iluiftai was badly Isft, otherwies _the start was perfect with Lysander and Kaiti first out. With a couple of-furlongs covered Lysander. on . the rails. Kiosk looked as if he might have difficulty in getting through, as he inn to the turn behind the leaders, but. an open- j ins came as soon a? thev straightened up fend he won very well.

CANTERBURY NOTES

COUNT CAVOUR WORKS WELL [Bi TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. With the improvement in the weather the tracks at Riccarton are now becoming very busy as trainers are making up for lost time and are hustling their horses along in preparation foi spring engagements. J. McC'ombe rias erected a couple of brush hurdles in one of his paddocks, where he schooled the thre j-year-olds Amorist and. Despot twice this week. The two-year-oki Cupid's Bow was also given a run over the obstacles. They all took kindly to the' novel exercise. Salumat, a seven-year-old sister to Sayonara, was tried in the jumping ring some time ago and shaped encouragingly. She was tried attain this week with Spearman as a mate, the pair giving a good exhibition. R. Lcngley will shortly give the pair some more serious tasks in their education as hurdlers. Count Cavour is striding out freely in his track work. He covered six furlongs alone this morning and registered fair time while appearing to be going very easily. It will be no surprise if he is a better horse this season than ever.

The Winter Cup winner Solferite is in fine order and he should add to his winning record very soon. 11. E. Nurse's two New Zealand Cup candidates. Rapier and Chick wheat, are doing exceptionally well in their work. The former will soon be ready to show form in a race.
