TWO HORSES SCRATCHED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WANGANUI, Wednesday. Otairi was scratched this afternoon for the Wanganui Guineas and Wanderlust this evening for the Durie Hack Handicap. REVIEW OF THE FIELDS. BY ARCHER. A field of 16 is carded for the Maiden Race and the event bears an open aspect. Most of those engaged will be making their first appearance of the season and this, in addition to the fact that there are a number who showed sufficient form last season to be worthy of notice in minor company, makes it difficult. Those to draw good post positions may be favoured, but a few likely to be backed are Otairi, Tea Time, and Aro de Val.

A useful field will contest the Okehu Hurdles and a good contest should result. The top-weight pair. Brigadier Bill end Koauau, have had recent racing on the -fiat and went well enough to indicate that they are near their best. San Pedro, Troilus, Peshwa, and Just John are improving hurdlers all with chances. It should be an even betting race, with San Pedro. Koauau, and Peshwa among the best supported.

Some useful hacks of fairly even class figure in the Putiki Hack Handicap and fancies are likely to take a wide range. Polydectus was a useful two-year-old last season, while David Garrick is on the improve and Cerf is a recent winner. Tintoretto and Athenry were successful at Marton last week and should again'go well. Archon and Mandarine shaped fairly well at Marton and should do better on firmer ground. It is probable that backers will follow recent form and go for Cerf, Athenry and Tintoretto.

The Seafield Handicap has attracted a decent field, with the consistent Royal Game, who won at Riccarton last month, at the top of the list. Le Choucas should strip very well after his race last week, and, unless the track is very heavy, should prove difficult to beat. Lausanne is reputed to be a very fast galloper, but may feel the lack of recent racing, as he has rot been up long, although he might go veil when fresh. Beaumont was second <o Huikai at Marton, and Monachan won decisively over six furiongs at New Plymouth recently Thaw showed good form r« a juvenile last season and has been doing nicely on the tracks, while recent form suggests Hipo and Partaga as the best of those lower down. Perhaps Le Choucas, Monaghan. and Partaga may receive eolid support.

It is probable that there will only be three runners in the Wanganui Guineas, as Otairi has forfeited his engagement in favour of the Maiden Race. Despite the small field, it is likely that the contest will be very interesting. On their form last season there seems to be very little between In the Shade, Damaris, and Great Charter. On the only occasion on which they met. In the Shade finished in front of Damaris, while the latter was ahead of Great Charter on the two occasions when they met. It is in favour of In the Shade that he had a race last week and he should run a solid mile. The fact of Mr. G. Currie relying solely on Damaris when he had several others encaged would indicate that she has done well through the winter and the daughter of Limond should go very close to winning, although In the Shade and Great Charter may have more followern- . I

A big field o£ hacks 13 carded for the Durio Handicap and the race is very open. Town Bird will be a better horse for bis race last week, but may have difficulty to concede weight to the consistent Denier, who has been performing well.. Bank Note shaped well at Marton and will do better on top of the ground, while Vast Acre, Lucky Days, and Avro should all have chances. Miss Mercia is a recent winner and should be one of the picks of those lower down, with Henna and Tea Time (if reserved) also possibilities. Post, positions may affect the betting, but Denier, Bank Note, and Miss Mercia may be strongly fancied. The Marangai Handicap has attracted a useful field and should provide a good contest, although some of those engaged are unlikely to be ready so early in the season. To Monanui has had a couple of runs lately and should be improved upon since Marton. where he ran creditably on the second day. Degage is favoured in some quarters, and at- her best would have a great chance. Beacon Light may need racing. With the improvement Eden Hall should make from hia outing at Marton last week he may show up. Mask has been galloping well and the same applies to Alloway. Bennanee won on the Wanganui course in May and may be preferred to Imperial Spark on the same mark. Recent form suggests Royal Mint and. Tame Fox, winners at Marton. and Shining Armour ns the best of the others. It is a difficult race, but Degage. Bennanee, and Royal Mint may be fancied. A good field of sprinters will contest the Flying Handicap. As the majority will be making their first appearance for the season, it is likely to prove a difficult race for backers. The top-weight division is very strong, but they may not shine under the hig weights so early in the season. Oration, Kiosk, and Le Choucas (ji reserved) are nicely placed in the middle of the handicap. Whenuanui may be coming back to form after his recent racing and is a likely light-weight, as also is Haiti. Kiosk. Oration, and Whenuanui may be among the best backed when betting ceases. CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLTIB HEAVY REDUCTION IN STAKES SAVING OF £6750 FOR SEASON. [B>' TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday.
