BOROUGH OF BIRKENHEAD.

WATERFRONT IMPROVEMENTS SEWERAGE SCHEME QUESTION. The Birkenhead Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. E. G. Skeates, presiding. The Mayor reported the members of the Auckland Harbour Board paid a visit to Birkenhead on Tuesday in connection with proposals made by the council. These embraced a site for a swimmingbath on the waterfront near Hinemoa Park, removal of the boat-shelters to a more suitable position, and handing over the roadway at Hinemoa Park to the borough. He anticipated no trouble from the board in respect of these suggestions, and thought the council could look to it for valuable assistance in regard to the improvement of Little Shoal Bay Reserve.

The Northcote Borough Council wrote stating it had agreed to the suggestion from Birkenhead that the joint committee of the two councils should consider a scheme for the completion of Little Shoal Bay Reserve as a popular recreation ground, and to invite the Birkenhead engineer arid the North Shore representative on the Harbour Board to attend. The council decided to take no action in regard to raising a loan for the relief of unemployment; but to avail itself of the subsidy under the Government scheme to effect improvements at Hinemoa Park, the wages to be 14s a day. The medical officer of health, Dr. H. Chesson, again declined to consent to the installation of septic tanks on certain sections, although urged by the council to reconsider his decision.

It was decided to consider the question of a sewerage scheme for Birkenhead at a special meeting on September 19. The waterworks engineer stated that for the month of August the consumption of water was 2.500.000 gallons. The surface of Lake Takapuna had risen 6in. in the month and was 2Aft. above high-tide mark.

Three permits for new buildings were granted.
