MAORI BURIAL GROUND.
NO EXHUMATION INTENDED. "f have never had any intention of interfering with the area where burials have taken place," said Mr. George Henning yesterday with reference to a petition which Kahupake Potatau has presented to Parliament. The petition state? the by Raj ground was included bv mistake in a land sale and the present owner, Mr. Henning, - desired to exhume the bodies so as to form a motor racing track. Mr. Henning said as a matter of fact the actual graves did not come within a chain of the proposed speedway. It was not true that he asked for exhumation of the bodies, which was unnecessary. What he did suggest was that the actual area containing the graves should be fenced The matter had been before the Native ASairs Committee in 1925, and was the •subject of an inquiry, tm the ground, by the Chief Judge of the Native Land Court last year. Mr. Henning had pointed out the area to he fenced to the Jurlge and had given an undertaking that it vrosild not be interfered with.
