CRICKET IN ENGLAND. GENTLEMEN V. PLAYERS. (Received September 1,. 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z.-Sun. LONDON, Aug. 31. In a cricket match Gentlemen v. Players the former in their first 'innings made 281 runs (Calthorpo 101). Hearne took five wickets for 33. The Players in their first innings have scored 40 for no wickets. FOOTBALLERS REACH • ENGLAND. NEW SOUTH WALES TEAM. A. and N.Z. LONDON, Aug. 31. The members of the Now South Wales Rugby Union football team, known as the Waratahs, arrived at Plymouth today by the Ormonde. The steamer reached the harbour in a typical English sea-mist. ' Directly the anchor was dropped Admiral Royds and a dozen members of the International Rugby Board, representing England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, went aboard to officially welcome the players on the boatdeck. Admiral Royds said they were looking forward to learning much from the New South Wales players' exposition of the game. They hoped the Waratahs would find the Home counties had maintained the high standard of efficiency and cleanness of true amateurism which was so desirable in the great national game. They also hoped the tour would cement the relations between the Dominions and the Home counties. The members of the team were looking wonderfully well and cheery. After facing a battery of photographers they boarded a tender and landed at the docks, where the Mayor accorded them a civic welcome.

In an interview, the captain ot the team, Mr. A. C. Wallace, said they were all fino and had thoroughly enjoyed the voyage. They could not train on board, but had kept fit with physical jerks and deck, games. They expected to be in full fighting trim shortly. The manager, Mr. E. G. Shaw, said the boys were as keen as mustard sind should do welL Except for slight seasickness and a few rough days the voyage 'had been a very happy experience.

AUSTRALIAN BOXER. GRIMES GOING TO CHICAGO. A. and N.Z. NEW YORK, Aug. 31. A message from Los Angeles says the Australia boxer, Billy Grimes, is motoring eastward and is expected to reach Chicago shortly. His plans are not definite, but it is believed he may fight in the East. It is understood he will then proceed to England. NEW ZEALAND HOCKEY TEAM. FINE RECORD IN AUSTRALIA. A. and N.Z SYDNEY. Sept. 1. The New Zealand hockey team finished its tour in Australia with an unbeaten record. It played 14 games, won 12 and drew 2. It scored 109 goals, while only 15 were scored against it. The Sydney Morning Herald says the performance of the team was the foesfc of any Dominion hockey team which has played in Australia.
