MANUKAU BOAT HARBOUR.

PROPOSAL FORMULATED. CONSTRUCTION OF ROCK WALL. A scheme for obtaining a protected boat harbour in the Manukau was discussed at a meeting of yachtsmen at Onehunga last evening, the Mayor, Mr. W. C. Coldicutt, presiding. Mr. T. Lloyd opened the discussion by urging the advantages of Geddis' Basin, the extinct volcanic crater which is such a peculiar feature in the Onehunga waterfront, He said this was a naturally-pro-tected area, of ample dimensions, and it required only dredging to make it serviceable, and the spoil could be dumped in front of the clubhouses for a sports area. Mr. x\. McLeod, president of the Manukau Yacht and Motor-Boat Club, questioned whether the basin could be turned into a boat harbour at a reasonable cost. As an alternative, he suggested the construction of a rock wall, projecting for about 30 chains in a south-westerly direction from the outfall drainage land at the bottom of Hill Street. It would run along the border of the present protected anchorage. This scheme was supported by Mr. Filmer, commodore of the Manukau Cruising Club, and also Messrs. R. G. Barnes, E. Morton, L. Bray and others. Mr. J. C. Sibbin, secretary to the Cruising Club, and convener of the meeting, brought a plan of the area under discussion, showing a proposed wall, slightly different from the other suggestion, and this scheme was unanimously approved by the meeting. On the motion of Mr. Barnes, seconded by Mr. McLeod. it was decided to wait on the Auckland Harbour Board and request it to construct this wall of 30 chains in a south-westerlv direction, together with a return of about 10 chains north-easterly, the deputation to consist of the Mayor and the commodores and presidents of the two clubs. It is proposed that the protected area should be left with an opening just in line with the extreme end of the iettv at the western side of the basin. This opening would face almost due south, and would therefore be protected from all the prevailing winds on the Manukau.
