THE OEVONPORT SHIELD.

COMPETITION CONTINUED. UNIVERSITY BEATS ARETA. The Devonport Shield competition, played under the auspices of the Auckland Hockey Association, was continued at the Remuora grounds on Saturday afternoon. The conditions were ideal and the standard of play was high. University defeated Areta after a closely contested game- Results are as follows : University, 2, beat Areta, 1. Somerville, 5, beat St. Luke's, 1. Somerville Colts, 3, beat Wesley, 1. University Colts, 3, beat Epiphany, 2. Carter initiated a fine concerted attack, which reached tho circle's edge, where Hume stopped cleverly With a well-directed hit Leonard sent the University forwards away and they carried play into Areta's twentyfive Davis effected a good clearance and a sharp sortie by Areta removed play to midfield Philpotts. on the left wing for University, made a fine breakaway, only to be held up by Davis. A strong concerted attack by Areta saw Hayson and Anthony invade the circle, but Radcliffe cleared. Leonard made a splendid opening and good work by Beeche improved matters. Exciting play followed in the mouth of the Areta goal, but Savage eventually brought relief with a timely speculator. A sortie by Areta wa3 crowned with success, when J. Carter connected and beat Linton with a strong shot. Areta, 1; University, 0. Upon changing round University quickly set up a strong attack, and after close play in the circle Miller scored. With fine combination m the forwards University launched a long eeriea of attacks that severely tested the Areta defence. University pressed hotly and gained a penalty corner. Radcliffe's shol being brilliantly stopped by Ninkie. Hamilton followed through but he missed they, net with a hard shot. Areta retaliated with concerted rushes and University had a strenuous time defending its goal A hard relieving hit by Hume put University on the attack, and after a brilliant bout of passing Seelen scored with a fine shot. University continued aggressive tactics, and only the sound defence prevented furtner scores. J. Carter led a stroag assault on the University citadel that terminated in Hayson missing the net with an angle shot. Areta made great efforts to score, but Leonard, Radcliffe and Hume offered very stiff opposition and it was unable to break through. Hamilton and Seelen, with pretty cross-pass-ing, placed University in a good position. Davis twice stopped dangerous movements with clever intercepting and well-placed hitting. A splendidly-contested game ended: University, 2; Areta, 1. SOMERVILLE V. ST. LUKE'S. Tho meeting of Somerville and St. Luke's provided a fast and spectacular game, in which the latter gained an early advantage through good concerted play by its vanguard. By means of cross-hitting Bay and Duncan reached the Somerville circle, where Gutry relieved with a hard shot. E. "Watts attacked for Somerville, and strenuous play followed in St. Luke's twenty-tive. Steele sent the St. Luke's vanguard away and Duncan took the ball into the circle. A penalty corner was awarded for an infringement, and Steele found the net. giving St. Luke's the lead. Upon resuming Somerville attacked down the left flank, Steele stopping progress at the twenty-five. A strong counter-attack by St. Luke's resulted in a penalty corner, which was well cleared by Munro. A sortie by Somerville saw E. Watts pass to Taylor, who goaled. St. Luke's replied with spirited dashes, but poor circle work nullified its efforts. Somerville made a capital combined offensive and E. Watts availed himself of an opening and scored. .St. Luke's made determined efforts to add tc its score, but it was unable to do so. In the last minute of play Rogers scored for Somerville, making the final score: Somerville, 5: St. Luke's, 1.

EPIPHANY V. UNIVERSITY COLTS. The game between Epiphany and University Colts opened in the latter's favour. The forwards launched a strong central attack thai penetrated the Epiphany defence, but Rankin kept his goal intact Merryweather and Hewitt were prominent for Epiphany and exciting play followed in the circle. Hewitt made no mistake with a hot snot. University replied with determined attacks and Hubble goaled. From another fierce onslaught Hunter put University ahead. Epiphany replied with several ooncerted rushes, from one of which Merryweather scored, making the half-time score: Epiphany, 2; University Colts, 2. Epiphany set up a strong attack ond H. Mills had a shot which Leonard turned behind. University retaliated with-a central offensive and Rankin stopped a hard shot. Then Wilson ran through and scored a clean goal. Epiphany made determined efforts to add to its score, but though it held a territorial advantage the forwards circle play lacked finish and the final score was 3—2 in favour of University Colts.

WESLEY V. SOMERVILLE COLTS. Somerville Colts held an early advantage against Wesley, who were short-handed. Gregson scored with a sharp shot. Wesley replied with an attack on the left flank and Slaney goaied. Somerville asserted great pressure on the Wesley goal and Peace found the net. The score at half-time was: Somerville Colts, 2; Wesley, 1. Somerville made determined efforts upon resuming, and exciting play was seen in the Wesley circle. Burton cleared and Fitt made a 70 yards' dash for the Somerville circle, where Wesley obtained a penalty corner. The Colts' forwards gained possession, and a strong assault followed.
