BEAUTIFYING MOUNT EDEN.

Sir, —In Saturday's HebIAXD we lead that a body of men", well known for their knowledge of trees and forest flora, have, at the invitation of the Mount Eden Borough Council, visited Mount Eden and its domain reserve, and have given their views on the beautjfication of this spot, including the crater. For the moment, I have little to say about the spoliation of our beautiful mountain, but in passing would advise extreme caution with regard to the planting and laying out of this domain There are people in New Zealand, and possibly in our midst, who have considerable knowledge with regard to the artistic and judicious handling of this important matter. It would be wise if our Mayor and councillors got into close touch with such people before spending any more money on "improving on Nature " My immediate concern, however, is what they are reported to be doing to the crater We learn that the council has actually allowed tree ferns to be planted in the crater. Surely thenis some mistake here The council has made a most serious blunder, if it has allowed this to be done Whoever heard of such vandalism ' Just imagine tree ferns in a volcano, or any other plants for that matter In the past this won derful volcanic basin has been the great attraction of tourists and others to Mount Eden Are we residents going to allow those who have not artistic knowledge, thus to spoil a natural wonder f W M. Rat>-ER.
