HOCKEY AT BRISBANE.

WIN FOR NEW ZEALAND.

EXCELLENT COMBINED PLAY.

STATE TEAM OUTCLASSED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received August 21, 8.30 p.m.) A. and N.Z. BRISBANE, Aug. 20. In a hockey match to-day the New Zealand team defeated Queensland by 9 goals to 1. The match opened the hockey carnival at the exhibition. The local team was completely outclassed, but played stubbornly against the superior combination of the New Zealanders. The visitors' play was fast, accurate and scientific. In the first half of the game the Queensland team held them in check to some extent. At half-time the scores were 2—o in favour of the visitors. From the start of the game, however, the New Zealanders took the lead. Seccombe scored a splendid goal, winding off, an excellent centre movement. Even play followed until Watts scored brilliantly from a back-hand stroke. At the beginning of the second half New Zealand had easily the better of the play. Towards the end of the match the visitors took complete command, and made a rapid bombardment of the Queensland goal. Watts scored two more goals and Seccombe another. Bell scored two goals and Spiers and Lusty one each. The sole scorer for Queensland was Best, who shot a goal after a fine forward movement.
