TOKIO, Aug. 21, Despatches from Chinkiang, 40 miles oast of Nanking, report that tho British are expected to rcoccupy tho concession by force. Japanese residents are exercising extraordinary precautions in view of tho anticipated clash. Messages from Shanghai state that the Southern Chinese forces have commenced looting a portion of the native quarters at Nanking. There is spasmodic gun-fire across the Yangtse River, which is black with river craft conveying tho last of the retreating Southerners, who are leaving tho north bank and are anxious to place tho river between themselves and tho Northerners. There is a temporary lull in tho situation. The Northerners are busy occupying the posts vacated by the fleeing Southerners, and are consolidating their gains preparatory to driving across the river. The Southerners are exhibiting all the signs of demoralisation.
