HOBSONVILLE AFFAIRS

STATE OF MAIN ROADS. PROMISE OF IMPROVEMENT. [BY "TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT. J HOBSONVILLE. Sunday Representatives of the Hobsonville Ratepayers' Association waited on Mr Murray, engineer to the Waitemata County Council, on his recent visit to Hobsonville, regarding the complaints concerning the state of the main roads around the district of the Hobsonville Ratepayers' Association. Mr. McDonald introduced Mr. Murray 'to the meeting. Mr. Murray said that he did not come there to explain county matters, but he was prepared to explain his ideas. Mr. Murray said he thought the money allocated had been spent on new roads. The county was getting a subsidy of 30s in the £1 to be spent on the main high way. The cost of the shell bank at Whenuapai was about £SOO. Regarding tho question of metal at Wht'nuapai and the grading of the Hobsonville Road, Mr. Murray said he was in favour of county councils having the right to tax motors. It was impossible to get metal from Morningside, so other arrangements had to be made. It was pro posed to get a motor grader and the coming summer would see a vast improvement in the grading of all roads. The grader would do a mile a day at a cost of- £2. An endeavour would be made to get Government assistance to form the road to the aerodrome at Hobsonville. If the Government were to take the main roads over it would be a grpat relief to the county. The only way to make side roads was to take a loan for the purpose. If, when miiney was available, the side roads required attention, then work could be done on them. He thought that the rates should be spent in the riding that pro \ ided them.
