CHILD ENDOWMENT.

EFFECT ON A COUNCIL. WORKMEN TO BE DISMISSED. The Mayor of Woollalira, New South Wales, Alderman L. W. Robinson, pointed out to the council last week what child endowment was going to cost them. The total amount in wages and salaries paid by the council was £3146 a month, and the amount it would have to contribute, the rate being 3 per cent., would be £ll2B a year. Investigations showed that about xZ ot the council's workmen would be entitled to receive payments from the Treasury, seven in respect of one child, four in respect of two children, and one in respect of three children. The tofal payments would amount to £4 10s a week, or £234 a year, whereas the cost to the ratepayers would be £ll2B a year. As no provision had been made in the estimates for the additional expenditure, the council would have no option but to dispense with the services of several workmen before the end of the financial year.
