LONDON BUTTER MARKET. NEW ZEALAND 168s TO J 70s. (Received August 19, 8.21 p.m.y A. and N.Z.-Sun. LONDON* Aug. 18. The London butter market is quiet owing to the holidays. Choicest New Zealand salted is quoted at 168s to 170s; Australian, 166s to 170s; unsalted, New Zealand, 170s to 1745; Australian, 168s to 1725; Danish. 1755. Cheese is quiet. New Zealand, 91s to 925; Australian, 88s ..to 90s. PAST YEAR REVIEWED. LOWER RATES REALISED. A. and N.Z.-Sun. LONDON, Aug. 18. Weddel's Review for the year ended June 30, 1927, says the average top prices for salted butter in the year were: Danish, 178s 3d per cwt. ; New Zealand, 163s 6d; Australian, 160s 9d. Argentine, unsalted, 157s 6d; Siberian, 144s lid. These figures represent a drop, ranging from 12s to 24s per cwt, compared with the previous year, Nov; Zealand prices being 24s lower. The review says the outlook does not promise any very material recovery Supplies from most of the producing countries are coming to an end, and the increase in the general trade in Britain is still in an unsatisfactory state. It is not likely that retail prices can be raised without affecting consumption. The producers must face the position. If they hope to get the industry on to profitable lines again the solution is to be found, not in the direction of higher selling prices, but in lower production costs. REPORTS FROM MERCHANTS.
