lachting—How to Sail and Manage a Small Modern Yacht," by Arthur E. Bullen and Geoffrey Prout (Brown, Son and Ferguson, Glasgow), is a book that should be on the shelves of every yachtsman or launchman's library. Though written in England the book does not as usual apply merely to English conditions, but is equally applicable to boating in the Hauraki Gulf or other parts of the New Zealand coast. The work, though of less than 200 pages, deals with every phase of the sport from buying the craft and the season's overhaul, knotting and splicing, weather forecasting, etc., to getting away from, or picking up, moorings or anchors in practically every conceivable set of 4ide and wind, and extended cruising. Even recipes for meals likely to be prepared on a primus in small centreboard boats are included. * Though not of too technical a nature it is well evident that the work was not written by an "armchair" yachtsmai for men of means only, but by thoroughly practical men who are conversant with all types of small craft, from the sailing dinghy to keelers and auxiliaries.

The article on trimming a boat by means of live or dead ballast to correct overmuch lee or weather helm is well worthy of study by our local skippers of small boats, while the whole book is written in a strain that will appeal equally to the novice or the experienced yachtsman. After studying the book carefully a landsman should be quite capable of managing a yacht in any ordinary circumstances.
