BALANCE IN DRESSING.

Balance in dressing is more important than the material of the dress, writes aii overseas fashion correspondent. By this I mean that the woman who is inclined, to embonpoint often makes the mistake of having her gowns made to fit too tightly, in the misguided belief that she will took slimmer than she really is. Instead the curves which she endeavours to conceal are only emphasised the more, while a loosely-hanging gown is far more becoming. Another mistake which women of this build usually make is to wear shining satins and velvets in bright colourings, or a mass formation of scintillating sequins and glistening beads. For some reason or other they avoid the softlyfalling fine laces and georgettes, in black, deep sapphire blue, navy or wine red, and even omit the charm of black and white. I speak of dressing for evening functions, of course. Fat arms and bare necks arc another source of bad taste- —it is really only that after all. for they are invariably unsightly, the former especially so, and should be veiled. This is where the charm of enveloping tulle comes in, especially when it tones with the gown. Onlv when the feminine back is really beautiful should there be an expansive show of it, and to .the gown which gives this display of Milady's beauty asset (a very rare one. there should bo a narrow train of trailing draperies somewhere to give it a balanced length The stoutish woman hasn't quite realised the charm of the uneven hem line eithc' There is no better detail in dress for camouflaging the lack of slenderness There are so many little ways of conforming to fashion's "dictates for the woman who has not a good figure—the modern lines of fashion and the present general who will onlv study detail or listen to the helpful advice of her costumier*.
