LOSSES ON FARM CROPS.

DISEASES AND PESTS. The enormous losses caused by plant diseases and insect pests on farms and orchards is not generally realised by the public. Recent reports show that in New Zealand fungoid diseases in cereals and roots alone caused a loss of £2,221,500, and to this sum must be added nearly as much from the ravages of insect pests on farms, orchards, market and private gardens. Last year, according to the Dominion Entomologist of Canada, that country lost £20,000,000 from the ravages of insect pests on growing crops alone, and the United States officials estimate the losses of farm and garden products due to insect pests and fungoid diseases at £275,000,000. It is practically certain that if combined steps were taken under skilled management a great portion of those losses could be prevented, but while the bulk of farmers and gardeners look upon plant diseases and insect pests as unavoidable the loss will continue.
