PAKURANGA HUNT.

RACE MEETING AT ELLERSLIE.

GOOD FIELDS ENGAGED. The annual race meeting promoted by the Palcuranga Hunt, and which has been held at Ellerslie over a long stretch of years, is always invested with a special dash of interest, for the true sporting Bpirit always permeates the proceedings. 'lhe meeting iixed to be held at Ellerslie to-day hue material to furnish a capital day's sport, and it should only require reasonably fine weather to ensure an attendance every way in keeping with the occasion and tbo surroundings.

REVIEW OF THE FIELDS. BY ARCHER. The programme will open with the Greenmount Hunters' Steeplechase and runners in the event will not be numerous. The majority of those engaged nave had no experience over the country here, and in thi3 respect Sea Comet and Glenlight ill have the advantage. Sea Comet has been working with plenty of dash and Glenlight has improved a good deal lately. The t-jp-weight, Wiltshire, is in capital order ard jumped a few fences in fine stylo the other morning. Little is known about the others. Hauturu is a safe jumper that has only had a short preparation and the same applies to Nukupere, while Del Sarto hails from Awapuni. Most support may be forthcoining for Sea Comet, Wiltshire, and Glenlight. A fair field will contest the Hunters Hurdles and the event bears an open aspect. The top-weight. Just John, won easily in similar company in June, and, despite a substantial rise in weight, should race prominently. Ramblin' Kid and Fair Abbey have also shown form in the class and aie ready to run solid races. Lady Acre, who hails from Hawera, bears a well-trained appearance and would only need t-o improve slightly upon her effort in running close up among the hack hurdlers at Wanganui to bo hard to beat. Town Hall, Mangani and Royal Day are possibilities among the lightweights and will not require to be pood to win. There may be a surprise, but Just John, Lady Acre, and Town Hall may carry solid support. The hacks engaged in the Sylvia Park Handicap are a moderaet lot and the distance may trouble a number of them. The top-weights, Bright Dawn, E'estina Lente. and KiTlute, have the best credentials and should stay better than most. Red Comut is useful and is also well, while Star Comet will be staying on when others are stopping. Blue Sky has not done much in the way of fast work lately, otherwise he would be strongly fancied, as ho shaped well in his last start. Charitaine has been working freely and Master Arch has been shaping well enough to have a chance. _ Backers will probably follow form and give most attention to Festina Lente, Killute, and Bright Dawn. The Jellicoe Handicap has attracted a useful field. Te Kara tan a good race in his last start, finishing fourth in the York Handicap, and he has reached headquarters in nice order. His stamina should stand to him, and with all his weight ho should be in the firing line. Desert Glow may feel tho want of recent racing, but Master Doon is well seasoned and has performed well in his latest engagements. Up to the present Delightment has shown no partiality for a middle distance and may be reserved for the sprint. Llandudno is an improving horse, who would only have to repeat his Cornwall Handicap form—he was narrowly beaten by Lonunt—to be very dangerous. His condition indicates that he has done a sound preparation and his prospects look bright. Queen Arch, who finished second in the Whvte Memorial Handicap at Trentham, should prove tho best of the light-weights, although Tinoiw. Golden Krist, and Thursby may be capable of respectable showings. Because of their better class the top-weights may bo most in demand, and Llandudno, Te Kara r.nd Master Doon may bo the popular picks. The class engaged in the Auckland Handicap is weak. The top-weight. Catapult, failed at Trentham, but he lias had time to freshen up in the meantime and v-ili only require to strip well to be fancied, as his winter form at Ellerslie should give him an excellent chance. Red Comet will run the mile better than most and has winning form to recommend him, while track form suggests War Officer is tho best of the others. Charitaine, Double Mint, and Taknrunga have been working fairly, and of the trio Tnkuranga may prove the best. Backers may show a preference for War Oflicer, Red Comet,, and Takurunga. The field in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup will not be large, but there should b» sufficient material for a good contest. It is a long time sinco Hypothesis displayed any form, but ho looks well and should be staying 011 at the finish. Pendavies is an improving horse, with very creditable form in his latest engagements, but little has been seen of Stonewall and Arsene Lupin lately. Syndicate and Raflferty (who has been working well) are solid fencers with light weights nnd they should run well. Sea Comet, Glenlight, and Del Sarto have an earlier engagement, and their running in the opening event should give a line on their prospects in this event. The popular fancies may include Pendavies, Hypothesis, and Syndicate. The Ladies' Bracelet bears an open aspect. Despite his big weight, Ramblin' Kid should run well if reserved for this event, but he is also engaged in the Huntors' Hurdles. Quinvardia has shown no form for some time, but in this class should have an opportunity to make good. Odin, who was doing well in his preparation, bled a few days ago, but seems none the worse for it, and has since worked satisfactorily Mangani is a distinct possibility, rind IPrince Lupin, from R. Hannon'e stable, may be another among the unknown quantities. Should Ramblin' Kid. Odin, and Mangani go to the post, they may command strong followings. A field of smart sprinters will contest the Dunedin Handicap and quite a number of the candidates have shown form in their latest engagements. Eden Hall and Finelli have not raced for some time and may not lie forward enough to show up, while Day Guard looks a little above himself. Delightment and King Lu' are fine sprinters in heavy going and can be expected to race well, while Le Choucaß notched a couple of seconds in Sydney during the winter. Town Guard, who has been doing his work nicely, and Tinokoa, are improving young horses that have raced well in their latest engagements and are nicely placed. Sir Archie has been moving with freedom and is ready to run a good race, while King Emerald may be best of the others. It should bo a solid betting race, with strong support for Town Guard, Sir Archie, and Delightment.
