FIERCE SEA BATTLE

WHALES AND THRASHERS. A REMARKABLE SPECTACLE. The residents of Coolangatta, New South Wales, recently witnessed a battle between whales and thrashers. Jt is not unusual at this period of the year to witness such encounters, but the spectacle of at least half a dozen engaged in the fight was a novelty. The battle lasted for more than two hours, and at times the whole body of the attacking thrashers was visible above the water line as they leaped high in the air preparatory to crashing down on their victims. At other times, portion of the whale would become visible, with the greater portion of the tail clear of the water. A most remarkable sight was that of a thrasher poised in a vertical position in mid-air, before its downward swoop. It appeared almost to hover in the air lor several seconds before plunging clown again. The participants were still fighting when they disappeared from view.
