Two young men, Thomas Turnbull and Robert Pryde Turnbull, who were arrested in Dunedin and remanded to Hamilton and Te Awamutu, were charged before justices here to-day with forgery of a cheque for £9 Bs. Stanley Rawlinson, licensee of the Royal Hotel, Hamilton East, said he supplied a blank cheque form having a number corresponding to that on the one produced, to some applicant on or about May 13, but he could not swear that either of the accused was the recipient, although both were in the hotel at the time. None of the writing on the cheque was hia own. George Osborne, licensee of the Star Hotel, Kiliikihi, said both accused came to him on May 15 and inquired about a section adjoining the hotel, where they said they intended to build a motor garage. They cashed a cheque, which later was returned from the bank. He thereupon informed the police. Constable Doyle said he saw both accused in Te Awamutu on May 15 in company with some' Maoris. To-dav both accused arrived under police escort, and he had no hesitation in identifying them. Both accused, when questioned, denied ever having been in Kihikihi. Three witnesses had identified both accused from among a group of other men. The accused men pleaded not guilty and reserved their defence. They were committed to the Hamilton Supreme Court for trial at the sittings next week.
