SHADE FOR CHICKENS.

Too much sun is almost, if not quite, es injurious to young chickens as too little. Natural shelter is the best kind of flli, and if the birds can be given access to a wood or coppice nothing better can be desired. When, however, there is no natural protection, artificial shade must be provided. There are a good many "*vays of accomplishing this, perhaps the simplest being to fasten two hurdles together with a layer of straw between. Trees and fruit bushes planted in the runs, when birds are being kept in confinement, answer admirably, and have the advantage of being useful in more ways than one. Whenever the conditions allow, chickens should be given their freedom. Many poultrykeepers cannot follow this plan, since they possess insufficient room to do so. But whenever such is possible ihis is the method to adopt.
