AUCKLAND COMPETITIONS

RECORD ENTRANCE LIST. Record entries have been received for this year's musical, elocutionary, literary and dancing festival, which opens at the Town Hall on' August 22. The total number of entries in all classes is 2560, but, as in many instances an entry represents several persons—from eight in a ballet to 40 in a choir—the committee has the task of marshalling no less than ,3000 performers. Tho competitions movement, which has long been popular in the Southern cities, has now definitely been established in Auckland, and if the quality of the peiformances is equal to those of last year the evening sessions, at which the finals are decided, should provide some splendid programmes. For the coming festival great interest centres round the choral contests, for which eight chinch clioiis and 25 school choirs are preparing, and there, can be little doubt that large audi ences will assemble to hear them. The elocutionary adjudicator, Mr. Harry Borradale. of Brisbane, arrived by the Marama on Tuesday, while his musical collaborator. Mr. Fred Slater (a prominent voice specialist and choral adjudicator from Wales), will arrive from the South t«i-day t . The society has set aside the mot-rung of the opening day for addresses bv the adjudicators to competitors. These will be given in the concert chamber oi the Town Hall, and will bo much appreciated by *hose who are about to be judged. Great care has been exercised i' the compiling 'of the evening pro grammes; the best three, from anything up to 60 performers in the various classes, will appear for final placing. In the majority of cases the competitors will render different items, so that there will be nothing in .tho way of monotony. Season ticket arrangements are advertised elsewhere.
