NOTES FROM RICCARTON

MANY HORSES BEING RESTED. [by telegraph.—own correspondent. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. Colds are prevalent in some of the Riccarton stables and a few of the trainers have eased up their two-year-olds until the conditions improve in the direction o) warmer weather. Nearly all the visiting horses who were here for the Grand National meeting have gone home. The only North Islander still at Riccarton is Kawini. who is making a slow recovery from the mishap that occurred to him in the Grand National Hurdle Handicap. Solferite and Taboo are enjoying a short rest, which was well earned by their efforts at the Grand National meeting They will both be in commission again shortly and they are likelv to do J. B. Pearson's stable further good service in spring engagements. , , , Charlatan has finished his racing for the present. He may be hacked for a time but he will do no more track work until the autumn when he will be started on mt> preparation for next winter's lumping campaign. _ _ The Southland trainer F. J. McKay is still quartered at Riccarton with Mr W. T Hazlett's team, and his intention is to keep them here until after the New Zealand Cup meeting. Frenchman and Irish, who went amiss on the eve of the Grand r*nHonal meeting, have been blistered and they will have a spell. The other horses are in good health and probably Apache will ioin them at Riccarton shortly. Magna Charts has been eased up smce he raced at the Grand National meeting, where hia form was disappointing. He looked well and with his undoubted pace he should do good service for his owner later ; n fbe season In the meantime, however, T. H. Gillett has decided to give him a re<=t and build him up in condition before asking him for any more, serious track efforts.
