THE MAUKU COMPETITION.

PRESENTATION OF PRIZES.

PUKEKOHE, "Wednesday.

The Mauku branch of the Fanners' Union last evening held its annual smoke social, at which the cap for the branch's annual mangel-growing competition was presented to the past season's winner, Mr. R. K. Membery. The attendance numbered over 50. Mr. A. Hill, president of the .branch, presided.

In handing over the cup and medal, the president congratulated Mr. Membery on having proved the winner for the two seasons in succession. Mr. Hill added that the entries in the competition last season showed an increase on the previous season, and the yields on the average were bet- s ter. The farmers were obviously taking more interest in the growing of mangel crops. > The president announced that for the special prizes offered by Mr. F. Perkins for crops grown from Sutton s seeds, tho past season's results were: —Mr. Memberv, 1; Mr. J. R- Malcolmson, 2; Messrs. J. Franklin and F. A. Cutfield, equal, 3. _ Mr T H. Patterson, instructor in agriculture, who judged the crops, said he noted an improvement in cropping as the result of the competitions. The Agricultural Department had arranged to officially acknowledge the winners by presenting them with appropriate certificates. He suggested that the branch into consideration the question of holding a car* rot-cropping competition. Mr. Membery said competition for the cup was becoming keener. He thought it possible to grow a mangel crop of 100 tons per acre in the Mauku district. An interesting address on pasture management was given by Mr. Patterson.
