POLLARD CUP MATCHES.

COMPETITION COMMENCED. CITY DEFEATS NORTH SHORE. The first round of matches in the Pollard Cup competition was played on Saturday. The grounds were heavy and the scoring in consequence was kept down. Chief interest centred in the meeting of City, loaders in the senior B grade, and North Shore, the team lowest on the list in the senior A grade. A close contest resulted in favour, of City by one point. ONE-POINT VICTORY. The match between City and North Shore, played at the Epsom Show Grounds, was full of incident and provided a good ex-'-lilion. Rain at the commencement of the game made conditions very unfavourable, ob the field was already in a soft state. The hall was difficult to handle with accuracy and passing was consequently of a poor nature. North Shore early opened a powerful atfnck. Mokomolto. North Shore wing-three-quarter. made a great sprint, but was stopped by the City fullback,, Jacobs. A piercing forward rush by City resulted in '->ll scoring. with the assistance of Barnes. Heard failed at goal North Shore rallied with a strpng attack and was still pressing it the close of the first quarter. City. 3: Shore. 0. North Shore continued to attack in a fore'eful manner. The passing of the ; tv backs was splendid throughout Heard, in particular, passed with perfect accuracy, although frequently hard pressed City made a further 'effort to score, but was unsuccessful, the play lacking combination. Heard received a kick in the face shortly before half-time and was forced to retire, rstv, 3: North Shore, 0. The third quarter was bright and spectacular. North Shore continued its offensive and Walsh, centre-threequarter, scored a tyr at the cornei. Johnstone converted. City started a forward rush, which was checked by Mokomoko. who kicked the ball ''alf the length of the field. W T illiams. a 'orth Shore forward, received an injury to his ankle and had to leave the field. '< the close of the third quarter the scores were:—North Shore, 5; City. 3. City was on the offensive throughout trie final quarter, Johnstone, the defending fullback, saving his team with powerful kicks on several occasions. Johnstone had the misfortune to receive a severe kick on the knee shortly before the conclusion of the game and was carried from the field. His absence was greatly felt. City obtained '■f lead with a try in the corner by Young. kick proved too difficult. No further scores resulted, the game ending:—City, G: Shore, 5. UNIVERSITY DEFEATS MARIST. As a senior game, the University and 'arist match was lacking in any of the finer points. University, showing better combination among the backs, won by 5 points to 3. Both sides started under a handicap, several junior players having to ie fielded. University attacked from the start, and after about five minutes' play e back division swung into motion and Moorhouse scored under the posts, Keegan converting. The Marist forwards transferred play to the University quarter in a series of short rushes. Two opportunities were afforded with penalty kicks, but both shots were unsuccessful. The change-over came with Marist still on the attack, the scores being:—University, 5; Marist, 0. A forward rush saw the ball travel to ,r '»rist territory. The University backs started a promising movement, but the >all went out of touch. Picking up near V University quarter-line, Johnston made a fine dash, but was collared within a few yards of his objective. However, Kelly was following up rapidly and he was able to gain possession and dive over. The kick failed and at' half-time the scores were 5 —3 n University's favour. Soon after resuming McLeod, the University wing, dodged his way over the line, but he was pulled back and a scrum ordered. The University forwards broke through from midfield. but they lost possession of the ball. Keegan ran through the opposition and what looked like a try for University was spoilt by faulty handling. Cornthwaite went, off with his shoulder hurl, leaving Marist one man short. Keegan was again prominent shortly afterwards, but. with only the fullback to beat,, his pass was not accepted. Lipscombe and Sturmey each converted a try, and the latter also kicked a penalty goal, tor Grammar, Clarke and Skelton scored tries, one of which Dudley converted. At Avondale. Hamilton retained the Peace Cup by defeating the Morrinsville Rugby representatives at Rugby Park to-day by 3 points to 0 in a strenuous game. There was an attendance of 3000 spectators. . The weather was fine, but the heavy ram during the week had made tho ground slippery mid muddy. Good tackling was a feature of the play of both teams. The only score in the gnmo was on unconverted try. Early in the game Cameron broke away and looked like scoring for the visitors. Ho was brought down and Hamilton took to Morrinsville territory, where it remained for the most part of the first quarter. Morrinsville then pressed strongly and Roach reached the lino, but lost tho ball ®n the line. Shortly afterwards Roach passed to Campbell, who made a great dash, but was brought down by Badeley. After the interval play was even until the Morrinsville backs executed a passing movement, which broke down when Campboll failed to take a difficult, pass ihe Hamilton forwards swept downfield and then Carter started a passing bout, from which Clemett scored Badeley's kick failed. Hamilton made repeated efforts to cross line during the last quarter and the pace was fully maintained, but there was no further score. CANTERBURY REPRESENTATIVES. In fine weather yesterday the Metropolitan Rugby team defeated the Country representatives by XI points to 9.
