OBITUARY.

MR. ROBERT BYCROFT

The death of Mr. Robert Bycroft, aged 77, occurred at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Crawford, in Fitzroy Street, Papatoetoe, on Monday. Mr. Bycroft; who- was born in the old windmill, at Epsom, a landmark of Aiickland for: many years, was a son cif the late "Mr. John, Bycroft, founder of the firm of Bycrofts, Ltd., flourmillers and biscuit manufacturers. The mill was in use as early as 1847. Mr. Bycroft entered Iris father's office as a clerk and:later became interested in flaxmilling. Before his marriage in 1894 to Miss Emmeline Froude, he spent a year at Norfolk Island as a missionary of the Methodist Churchy He was a lay-reader for many years. After his retirement from about 10 years ago, Mr. Bycroft resided at Onehunga, and about three years ago went to liv 6 with his daughter at Papatoetoe. Mrs. Bvcroft survives him. The • funeral .will take place at the Otahuhu cemetery this morning.

.MR. JOHN W. COMBER. . Mr. John "Whitley" Comber, who died in Auckland on Sunday, was born in Shoreham, Sussex, in 1852; Ho migrated to New South Wales at the age of 30, and was in business, as ,a stovekeeper in several country settlements. He came to Auckland in 1898, and served for a period on the staff of the Direct Supply, Company. Later, he was foe 15 years an employee of A. J. Entrican and Company, Ltd., retiring a few years ago. Mr. Comber is survived by his wife, one son, Mr. D'Arcy Comber, oi ! Gisborne, and one daughter, Mrs. McGivary,: of Dnnedin. : T \,f, *

MR. W. A. MILLS. -[ There passed away at bis home in Dorset Street, Grey Lynn, yesterday, after a short illness, Mr. William A. Mills, sub-accountant in the Auckland branch of the Bank of Australasia and only son of Mr. Tom L. Mills, editor of the Feilding Star, and Mrs. Mills, who were in attendance when their son died. Mr. Mills was a sefgeant in the Sixth Haurakis and was twice on Gallipoii, being wounded at the original landing and more seiriously after the Suvla Bay landing. He often suffered as an after* math of his war dnd • became blind on one occasion. He was stationed in* the branches of "the ba'rik' at' Feilding, Rotorua, Waipukurau, Waipawa - and Morrinsville. Mr. Mills, who was onlv 34, is survived by his wife, a daughter of Mr. Fred. Ellis, of Morrinsville, and four children. The funeral will take place this afternoon.

MR. THOMAS SCANDRETT. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] "WARKWORTH, Tuesday. The death has occurred of Mr. Thomas Scandrett, a resident of Mullet Point all his life, at the age of 50 years. Mr. Scandrett was a successful frait farmer and was very popular in the district. He took a leading" part in all public affairs and was a prominent exhibitor and judge at local shows. ' ; -

MR. D. B. HOWDEN. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Tho death occurred at his residence at Heretaunga yesterday of. Mr. David Brown Howden, at the age of 81. MrHowden was born in Edinburgh and educated at the Edinburgh Academy. He came to New Zealand irf 1873 and joined the service of the Colonial Bank when it first started. Afterwards he joned the staff of the Bank of New South Wales, at Christchurch. Later Mr. Howden came to Wellington, and went into business with his brother in the Wellington Biscuit Company, in which he continued until about 18 years ago, when ho went into retirement at Heretaunga. Mr. Howden was one of the founders of the Hutt Golf Club and -.was also the originator of the New Zealand Golf Council, in collaboration with Mr. Wilder, ,of Christchurch. He was a foundation member of the Wellington Golf Club at Heretaunga, and took a keen interest in the game until very recently. He leaves- a widow and two daughters. .
