HERD-TESTING GRANT.

ASSISTANCE APPRECIATED.

" NEW ERA FOR THE FARMER."

MR. DYNES FULTON'S VIEWS.

[by telegraph.—own correspondent. ] HAMILTON, Tuesday. . Keen satisfaction with the Government's action in granting £BOOO for the purpose of helping herd-testing during the forthcoming season was expressed to-day by Mr. Dynes Fulton, chairman of the New Zealand Federation of Group Herd-Test-ing Associations, and. chairman of directors of the New Zealand Co-operative. Herd-Testing Association. Mr. Fulton said both the organisations he was associated with had worked hard for two years to obtain Government assistance for herd-testing, and it was very gratifying to all concerned that the grant had been made. He felt that the vote would lead to a considerable expansion of herd-test-ing and that as the result increased production and better financial returns would accrue to the farmer. Mr. Fulton said he hoped the Minister would exercise extreme care in the appointment of the board required to administer the grant, for on the impartial and equitable manner in which the money was distributed a great deal depended. The allocation of tho grant would require very careful handling. The action of the Government would give a great stimulus to the herd-testing movement and would enable groups to be established in isolated districts where -for various reasons testing was impracticable under present conditions. He mentioned that the association already had a calf-marking system in operation and that the Government grant would be a material factor in further popularising the work that was being carried on. Arrangements had been made between the dairy division and the association for providing a special test for all the pedigree cows of breeders. In this way the Dominion would be falling into line with the system that obtained in Australia. Concluding, Mr. Fulton expressed appreciation of the support the herd-testing movement had received from the Agricultural Department and the chambers of .commerce, and said he felt a new era was opening for the dairyman of New Zealand as the result of the department's enterprise. •
