DRESS TRIFLES.
The creators of new fashions seek to complicate our existence. It is the handkerchief now! It should have a touch of the same colour that you favour for your buttonhole in its border, it seems, or it must be carefully chosen to go with the waistcoat you weai', or seem to wear, since the jumper manufacturers have hastened to give us waistcoat jumpers. When you wear a black frock nowadays it must have something outstanding about its line. Very long streamers of lace from the shoulder —quite half a dozen, and several inches below the skirt —are popular. Then there is the skirt, which shows the knees in front and almost hides the ankles at the back. These ,are ugly, but they are. likely to be fashionable. The plain gold collar has now a tiny onyx or diamond or enamel monogram on it. In a certain exclusive circle—cosmopolitan in name but chiefly Parisian in fact—powdered hair in the evening .is regarded with favour, and blonde beauties are adding glitter to their shingled heads by the introduction of fine gold powder. A woman with a naturally fair skin and dark hair always looks charming—at night—when a discreet dust of powder has produced an unexpected white mesh and a discreet patch has underlined the charms of eyos or mouth. But even when powder-aud-patches are omitted, pale grey stuffs are popular for evening frocks,, and tKe new shade of grey-blue which is so delicious in chiffon velvet. Creamy white satin, too, is a tremendous favourite, especially for women who have left early youth 'behind.
