ORANGE LODGE PARADE.

PART TAKEN BY BAND.

PUKEKOHE COUNCIL'S OBJECTION; [by telegraph.—own correspondent. 3 PUKEKOHE. Tuesday. Exception to the Pukekohe Municipal Band having played at the Orange Lodge parade at Pukekohe on Sunday, July 10, - taken by : the Pukekohe Borough 'Council at its' meeting last evening. The Mayor, Mr. John Roylly, said ho considered *it improper for the band, as an •-organisation• whose instruments belonged to the public, to take part in any i highly-partisan function. Ho moved that the-.council, write' tRe band intimating that it desired it to ...refrain from attendance at such functions in future. "Mr." J. Bcllhouse seconded, pro forma, Messrs. F. J. Morrow and J. P. Rae sail! they thought the band attended just as it would attend a church bazaar or any other- function. It probably .accepted the engagement without going deeply into the question as to whether the function was .one of partisan nature or not. Mr. Bellhoruse said he understood the band was paid for-its services, and probably accepted the engagement to earn the money, just as it would accept-, other engagements. It- was a delicate point which lent itself to faction fighting. Some people,' ho, said, might resent the band 'playing at ! the races becauso they objected to horse-racing. Mr. Rae added that probably many of the younger members of the band knew nothing of the history that led to- the Orange movement and oounter movements. He thought nothing should be done that might result in their probing into the matter. The Mayor said he considered church ba?aars. and races, which numbers of various denominations attended, were more of a public function than the parade in question, which tended to ruffle the feelings of one section of the community. Mr. Morrow: Not in this country. The motion was carried. . .
