MINE SURFACE COLLAPSES

ACCIDENT IN GERMANY.

FIVE WORKERS ENTOMBED. FRANTIC RESCUE EFFORTS. PITHEAD WORKS SUNK. CRATER 220 YARDS DEEP. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. (Received July 20, 7.40 p.m.) Sun. BERLIN, July 25. An extraordinary mining accident occurred at the Auguste Victoria coalmine at Huls, in the Ruhr district. Heralded by rumblings and explosions the pithead works, including a cage in the shaft, suddenly disappeared into a crater 220 yards deep. This depression rapidly spread over a wide area and houses within a radius of one mile were evacuated. The majority of the miners had sufficient warning to escape, but frantic efforts are now being made to rescue five men who were entombed owing to an inrush of water into the shaft.
