PUKEKOHE AFFAIRS.

PROPOSED SEWERAGE SCHEME

ENLARGEMENT OF WATER MAINS

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PUKEKOHE, Tuesday. The Pukekohe Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor', Mr. J. Routly, presiding. It was decided that work to be done this financial year should include the metalling of Kayes Road. formation and tarring of a footpath on the southern side of Victoria Street, from Seddon Street to Helvetia Road, and on the northern side for 10 chains; footpath surfacing on the Domain frontage in Harris Street; footpath formation on the eastern side of Prospect Terrace and the laying of scoria on Reynolds Road. Further metalling in Station Road, permanent formation and surfacing of the Hall Street footpaths, and the continuation of bitumen-sealing in Paerata Road to tho borough boundary, were deferred until March 31, 1928.

A lengthy report on sanitary conditions in the main street was submitted by the health inspector, Mr. T. C. Thompson, who said the present position was one that should not be allowed, to continue, but it was difficult to obtain an improvement without installing sewerage. In 1920 the council was given authority by the ratepayers to raise £16,000 for a sewerage system, and only a small amount had been raised so far, to cover engineering charges and cost of land. The inspector recommended that the council consider raising the balance to provide a sewerage scheme for the business area, of a nature suitable for incorporation into a moro comprehensive scheme later.

The Mayor said £SOOO of the loan was allocated for financial assistance to property owners for connections to the sewerage scheme when installed. It was decided to ask the drainage engineer, Mr. T. V. Gulliver, how much of the central portion of the town could bo sewered, and outfall works provided, for, say, £IO,OOO. The Waterworks Committee recommended that the council place a loan proposal before the ratepayers to raise £7500 for enlarging the water mams in certain streets and generally making tho waterreticulation system moro efficient for firefighting in the closely-occupied area of tho borough. Tho Mayor and the town clerk, Mr. J. F. Deano, were deputed to take the preliminary steps in tho matter and it was agreed that the question of an additional reservoir on Doctor's Hill be made a prominent feature of the loan proposal. Tho medical officer of health forwarded reports on the analysis of two samples of water from Paerata Creek. These showed bacillus coli present in one cubic centimetre and one-tenth of a cubic centimetre respectively. It was stated this meant the water was unfit for human consumption.
