ITALY IN THE AIR.
"WE MUST HAVE WINGS." FRONTIER DEFENCE PLANS. LONDON, July 3. "Italy must have wings," declares Signor Balbo, Italy's 30-year-old UnderSecretary for Air, who was among the foreign representatives who attended the Royal Air Force pageant at the invitation of the British Government. Signor Balbo flew from Rome to London in his own Fiat biplane. He now proposes making a non-stop return flight. He stated that by 1930 Italy will have 2797 frontier defence aircraft, consisting of 865 bombers, 1250 chasers, and 682 reconnoitring planes. The Italian Government, Signor Balbo added, had realised that the best preparation for defence was an efficient civil air service, on which they were now concentrating. The plans, it was added, included tho establishment of club centres, equipped with . small aeroplanes, near towns and cities.
