Th'» Sydney Referee, in commenting on the Purdv-Fairhall boxing match at Melbourne, says: The referee, Mr. Stokesbury, missed an opportunity of making a name for himself in not disqualifying the New Zealander in the first round. It was a shocking exhibition. Purdy was holding on from the word "go." To give him his due, Fairball wanted to make a fight of it, but Purdy clung to him like a limpet and absolutely refused to tight at all. The New Zealander lacks the fighter's instinct, and will never prove an attraction with his grape-vine methods. It was a dreary affair, and everyone was glad when the finish came.
