NEWMARKET INTERESTS.

PROPOSED STREET WORKS. LOAN TO BE RAISED. The Newmarket Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, presiding. It was decided to approach the City Council to obtain a proportion of the cost of the proposed improvements to an area known as "No Man's Land," in Carlton Road and George Street, extending from Park Road to Tctoki Street, and to raise a loan not exceeding £3OOO for this work and for the formation of Mortimer Pass. Tlx- City Council has agreed to pay half the cost, £BOO, of the latter work. The loan is to be borrowed under the unemployment legislation, and application is to be made ior the Government subsidv on the cost of labour.

The Streets Committee submitted an estimate of expenditure on streets for the year ending March 31, 1928, which involves £3492, including £1450 for general maintenance and £53/ for repairs to footpaths The traffic inspector reported that 923 drivers' licences had been issued.
