VICAR OF ALL SAINTS'.
REV. W. W. AVERILL CHOSEN. SUCCESSOR TO CANON YOUNG. The appointment of the Rev. W. W. Averill, son of Archbishop "Averill, as vicar of All Saints', Ponsonhy, in succession to Canon F. W. Young, who will retire next December after eight years' service in the parish, was announced yesterd.av. Mr. Averill was born in Christchurch, where his father was then vicar of St. Michael's. From a preparatory school he went to Christ's College, which he attended for several years. He was a member of the college first fifteen and was also captain of the senior cricketteam in 1913. Being too young to enlist at the beginning of the Great War, Mr. Averill acted for some time as aide-de-camp to the Governor-Heiiera!. Lord Liverpool. In 1915 lie came to Auckland, where he en tered St. John's College, Tamaki. and also studied at Auckland University College. Later he went into camp and finally left New Zealand as an officer in the mounted rifles of the Seventh Reinforcements. He served as captain and adjutant in Palestine and Egypt until the end of the war, and in 1918 toured England in charge of the New Zealand military football team. After spending a short period in England Mr. Averill returned to Auckland, where he was engaged in business for a while. He then resumed his studies at St. John's College and the University College and took his B.A. degree in 1923. He was ordained deacon the same year and entered the priesthood in 1924. For the following two years he acted as curate at Cambridge, after which he was appointed vicar of H;uiraki Plains.
