The outstanding match at the Wimbledon lawn tennis championship meeting today was that in which the American representative, Tilden, defeated Brugnon (France). This victory admitted Tilden to the .semi-finals. The Frenchman pluckily took the first three games. Then Tilden asserted his superiority and won the next three and went on to win the set. Often a ball flashed past Brugnon before lie had recovered from the previous stroke. Tilden took the first four games of the second set at a bewildering pace. There was then an hour's delay owing to rain. Brugnon had established a lead of s—o in the'third set when play was again delayed. Although Brugnon won this set Tilden's hitting was the more severe. The American won the fourth set and the match. The principal results of to-day's games MEN'S SINGLES. ' FIFTH ROUND. J Tilden defeated Brugnon, 6—3, 6—l, | 3—6, 7—5. WOMEN'S DOUBLES. SECOND ROUND. I Misses Wills and Ryan defeated Mrs. jCo veil and Miss Sterry, 6—2, 6—3. j THIRD ROUND. .Mrs. God free and Miss Betty Nuthall defeated Mrs. Lycett and Miss Colyer, 6—3, 6—3. MISS BETTY NUTHALL. (Received June 28, 5.5 n.m.) A. and N.Z. LONDON. June 27. It is stated that Mr. C. B. Cochran has made two offers to Miss Betty Nuthall, the brilliant young English tennis player, to turn professional.
The first offer is said to have been one of £15,000 for an exhibition tour of the world. This was not accepted. The report is that the second offer is one of £30,000, and Betty's mother is said to be considering this. She has until Wednesday to decide.
