SCOTTISH COUNTIES GAME. DEMPSTER MAKES 154 RUNS. FIRST' INNINGS TOTAL 304. By Telegraph—Press Association—Cop.vrieht; A. and N-.Z. LONDON. June 27. There were 300 spectators at the cricket match, New Zealand v. Scottish - Counties, which was commenced to-day at Ferry Port on Craig, Dundee. The visitors, who batted first, easily maintained the upper hand. The feature of the innings was Dempster's brilliant batting. He outshone his confreres, who only showed moderate form. Dempster scored freely all round the wicket. He hit one six and 16 fours. When sturiips were drawn New Zealand had made 304 arid the home side nine for one wicket. SCOTS' FIRST INNINGS. TWO WICKETS DOWN FOR 40. (Received June 29, 12.45 a.m.) A nnd N.Z.-Sun . LONDON, June 28. The cricket match New Zealand vScofctish Counties was resumed this morn- ! mg. The home side continued their, first innings with the score at nine runs for one wicket. The total is now 40 for two wickets. Ha Hey, the not out man, who bad one run to his credit, added six and was then bowled by Bernau. Haigh and Wood are now together. The former has made 24 and the latter one. One exti'a completes the total. By virtue of his performance against the Scottish Counties'team C. S. Dempster, the Wanganui batsman, has brought his total number of runs for the tour within easy distance of 1000. He has now scored 915 runs in 21 innings, three times not out, and his average is 50.83. R. C. Blunt has beaten him in the race for the first 1000 runs and is also above him in the batting with ari average of 52.73. The century made against the Scottish Counties was the third Dempster has made on the tour. His first was when he scored 109 not out against the Club Conference team and his second a score of 178 against •Durham It will be remembered, that Dempster's form in Plunket Shield games prior to the departure of the team from New Zealand was distinctly disappointing, and that there were many who criticised his selection. His failure to strike form in representative games was probably due to the fact that he had last season been playing in Wanganui against bowling which is far from being first-class He has evidently returned to form now and has proved one of the most consistent batsmen on the side. He is also one of the few whose fielding has been praised. New Zealand's first innings score against the Scottish Counties was largely a oneman effort, and that man was Dempster. However, the tour is likely to become strenuous and it can easily be understood that when the tourists are playing against a weak side they can be excused for not fully exerting themselves.
