NEW LYNN AFFAIRS.

SEWERAGE WORKS TENDERS. The New Lynn Town Board met last evening, the chairman, Mr. W. G. Lovie, presiding. Nine tenders were received for tunnelling and earthwork in connection with the construction of the main sewer. Mr. Stackpole and party's tender for 30in. pipes and construction work, amounting to £12,716, was accepted. The Revs. VV. IJ.1 J . itaukin and J. JNelson attended as a deputation from the combined churches in the district to ask permission to use the triangle reserve for the purpose of erecting a war memorial. It was intended to beautify the reserve with rockery llower-beds and to provide drinking fountains. If the board granted the use of the site it was the deputation's intention to call a public meeting to see what support was forthcoming. After brief discussion, the matter was deferred. Mr. Rankin also asked the board for co-operation in providing a sports area for the young men of the district, the use of Lavvson Park being suggested. Consideration was deferred until the financial position could be discussed by members of the board. The chairman of the Works Committee reported that he had authorised the Waitemata Electric Power Board's engineer to remove certain street* poles. Messrs. T. Feilding and I. Hughes entered a strong protest against any members of tho board authorising work without the board's sanction. Alter some argument, the action of the chaii'man of the Works Committee was endorsed, Messrs. Feilding and Hughes asking that their objettion be recorded. The building inspector reported that during the past fortnight seven permits had been granted. There are at present eight houses in course of construction. Considerable discussion took place regarding the policy of the board in connection with permanent works. It was the general opinion of members that it was not economical to proceed with earthwork during the winter, and it was resolved that no new work be undertaken and certain works in hand be discontinued until the spring. This will mean reducing tho staff for a short periooi.
