LAUNCH PARTY SAFE.

FIVE MEN FROM OPOTIKI. FOUND ON WHALE ISLAND. * PICKED UP BY A SCOW. CRAFT LOST IN A GALE. [BT TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WHAKATANE, Thursday. News was received in Whakatane this afternoon that the five members of the crew of the fishing launch Scout, which left Opotiki on Friday last, had picked up on Whale Island by the auxiliary scow Motu. The names of the men are Mr. Allan Abbott, owner of the launch, Messrs. J. King and H. Jones, and two Maoris. They set out on a fishing trip round Whale Island and Raurimu Rocks, and were duo back at Opotiki on Sunday. A party from Whakatane saw the launch's crew on Whale Island on Saturday. The launch was then anchored off the island and the men, who were ashore, reported successful fishing. The Motu has not returned, but it is surmised that later the launch was driven ashore in the gale which sprang up, and that the crew were "for the time being marooned on the island. As there are huts on the island and they had plenty of food with them, besides fish, it is probable they suffered no great privations.
