What is claimed to be the largest hotel in the world, the Stevens, has just been opened in .Chicago. Us cost was £5,250,000. It is 29 storeys high, and extends for a full block along Michigan Boulevard. It has 3000 outside rooms, and 3000 private baths, with circulating ice-water in every room. There is a library of 25,000 volumes. An exhibition hall covers 35,000 square feet. There are eight ballrooms, club rooms for men and women, and a theatre that seats 1200. A two-storev colonnade on the roof provides extra facilities for dancing. Besides many private dining rooms, there are four commodious restaurants arid a lunch room. The main dining room has a seating capacity for 4000, and the banquet chamber contains 3000 chairs. Sixty thousand bath towels and 50,000 linen face towels are included in the equipment of the rooms. The furniture is mostlv in the style of Louis XV and Louis XVI. There are nine different designs, in walnut, mahogany and maple. The construction of the furniture, for strength, durability, comfort and beauty, of design, is stated to represent a standard that has never before been attained in the United States.
